Seventeenth century tulip growers were so obsessed with the mystery of 'broken' tulips (tulips with unexpected marbled patternings) that they believed scattering the soil with powdered paint pigment would fix the colours they desired.

It wasn't until the 1920's that scientists discovered that the patterning was caused by a virus left by aphids.
