Family: Taxaceae
Genus: Taxus
Species: baccata
Common Name: Yew
we love: A classic of old English Gardens. The dark needles of Taxus baccata make a rich and dense backdrop to herbaceous borders when planted as a hedge or used to divide a large garden into smaller garden rooms.
Unusually for a conifer the plant responds very well to hard prunning re-sprouting directly from old wood.
Left alone the plant in its wild form will create a broadly conical tree reaching up to about 15m high. Suprisingly though despite its lack of flowers there are a large number of cultivated forms ranging widely in shape from low growing prostrate shrub-like forms to vertical columns.
