Syringa vulgaris

Syringa vulgaris

Family: Oleaceae

Genus: Syringa

Species: vulgaris

Common Name: Common Lilac

Syringa vulgaris

The perfect small tree for a small garden Syringa vulgaris (or, indeed, any one of the many Lilac cultivars) will provide ample flower and scent in shades of white, pink, red, purple and (of course) lilac.

Arguably a shrub in many cases, the lower branches of Syringa vulgaris can usually be pruned to raise the crown giving the impression of a small tree. Huge numbers of cultivated forms exist varying little except in hue.

Position Syringa vulgaris in full sun to promote the most flower and then sit back and enjoy the feast of flower and scent.
