Family: Rutaceae
Genus: Skimmia
Species: japonica
The tolerance of Skimmia japonica to shade is one of several endearing attributes. Its ability to grow happily in the shadows whilst other plants struggle as if in exile makes it a star performer for those difficult locations under trees or where the sun fails to shine.
White or pink tinged flowers appear in mid spring followed later in the summer by long lasting bright red berries which remain on the bush well into the winter, at least on female plants.
If this wasn't just too good to be true there are a wide range of cultivated forms providing attractive flower buds and plants of various shapes and sizes, although most only reach a meter or so in height.
One word of warning.... Skimmia japonica has a habit of becoming chlorotic (meaning its leaves yellow) if allowed to dry out so make sure it gets a good, moist soil.
