Family: Hyancinthaceae/Liliaceae
Genus: Scilla
Species: siberica
Common name: Siberian squill
Scilla siberica is another wonderful hardy and delightfully uplifting bulb for Scottish gardens.
Its intense blue, downward facing, elegantly bell-shaped flowers follow the earlier flowering snowdrops.
Each bulb will send up several flower stems from amidst a base of lush green strap-like leaves, each offering one, two, or even three flowers.
Scilla siberica is an incredibly versatile bulb. So long as it has well drained soil and either full sun or partial shade, it will grow well in a wide range of habitats.
As a stand alone feature plant it adds a stunning splash of electric blue to rock and gravel gardens, as well as the front of borders and raised planters.
Because of it's height (up to 15cm) Scilla siberica will grow well in grassy areas and can colonise open areas and lawn edges in a similar manner to crocus. It will have flowered by the time the grass grows long enough to be cut.
And as with so many spring bulbs it's happy in a woodland setting. Once settled it will spread quickly and create an excellent carpet of intense blue haze.
