Family: Grossulariaceae
Genus: Ribes
Species: sanguineum
Common Name: Flowering Currant
The bright cercise pink flowers of Ribes sanguineum in early spring really wake you from winter's slumber. One might even describe it as shocking, especially if positioned next to other spring flowering shrubs such as Forsythia, certainly not a combination for the faint hearted.
Ribes sanguineum is tough and will tolerate most growing conditions. It can easily be left alone to do its own thing as well as responding well to pruning. I've seen it do well in woodland gardens as well as in exposed locations.
Whilst I love Ribes sanguineum's cheery nature and easy to grow character, do be careful about its location. The smell of the flowers is pungent, even unpleasant, not a plant to be sniffed delicately as you pass.
