I am always amazed that Puschkinia libanotica, a delightfully bonny yet sturdy bulb, isn't more widely known or grown.
Puschkinia libanotica's pale blue, star shaped flowers have a distinctive dark blue vein running through the petal which gives them a delicate and attractive intensity.
Puschkinia libanotica is a useful bulb for creating a continuous flow of spring planting as they flower as the earlier spring bulbs fade and before the later spring bulbs open.
Originating in the mountanous meadows of Turkey they desire a well drained soil with full sun or partial shade.
As a result these tough, easy to grow bulbs are perfectly suited to being planted in open woodland swathes where they can naturalise and spread as well as in grittier rock and gravel gardens.
However, I always like to have some in a raised bed or planter where I can enjoy their delicate colouring without having to go down on my hands and knees.
Puschkinia libanotica's hardiness makes it another great bulb for planting in Scotland.
