Family: Primulaceae
Genus: Primula
Species: vialii
Now, I have to confess to a soft spot when it comes to primulas or at least to the wild species.
Swathes of primulas around the moist edges of streams and in open glades are one of those horticultural delights.
Primula vialii is perhaps one of the most flamboyant of the group. Where many primulas hang their heads almost embarrassed by their beauty Primula vialii by mid summer appears to be sending rocket shaped flowers to the moon.
Like many primulas, Primula vialii is a plant of damp meadows and waterside edges. Grow it in a little shade where there is no danger of the soil drying out or in full sun if you can guarantee it moist feet.
Primula vialii is not a large plant rarely reaching more than 30cm (a foot) or so, nor is it long lived. Classed as a short lived perennial it may be necessary to collect seed in order to maintain your stocks.
Primula vialii is best accompanied by other primulas or small plants that won't over crowd it. Perhaps it's simply at its best when seen on mass.
