Family: Oleaceae

Genus: Osmanthus

Species: heterophyllus

Common Name: False holly

Osmanthus heterophyllus

A reliable if slow growing large shrub, Osmanthus heterophyllus gets its name from its variable leaves, some of which are holly like, others which are smooth (hetero meaning different and phyllus meaning leaf).

The main interest is the shrub's fragrance which comes from tiny white flowers borne in late summer and through autumn.

All in all if you are limited for room you could buy a more showy plant but in a large garden it's a very nice addition. The form 'Aureomarginatus' has slightly more interesting variegated leaves but as a consequence is even more slow growing.
