Lychnis coronaria

Lychnis coronaria in flower

Family: Caryophyllaceae

Genus: Lychnis

Species: coronaria

Common Name: Dusty miller, Rose campion.

Lychnis coronaria

Not a flower for the faint hearted the petals are so vivid that anyone with the meerest of dodgy tickers is likely to drop dead on the spot.

The phosphorescent cerise pink flowers are not easy to combine with other colours although it sits quite comfortably with the plant's own silver foliage. In our own garden we have successfully combined it with Purple sage (Salvia officinalis 'Purpurascens') but its habit of self seeding can lead to alarming combinations.

Treat it as a short lived perennial or biennial and make certain it receives well drained soil as this is a plant that can deal comfortably with drought but not water logging.
