Family: Oleaceae
Genus: Jasminum
Species: nudiflorum
Common name: Winter Jasmine
Jasminum nudiflorum means 'naked flower' and goes some way to describing what is so wonderful about this Jasmine.
The common name Winter Jasmine perhaps give us a better clue. Jasminum nudiflorum is one of those fantastic plants which chooses to flower during winter and early spring on green stems before the new leaves re-appear.
Whilst the plant is prone to being a little scruffy it responds well to pruning and the flowers are such a cheery yellow everyone should be able to find a space for it somewhere in their winter garden.
Unlike many Jasmines, Jasminum nudiflorum is not a fragrant plant. Nor is it a climber. Instead, it is happy trained as a wall shrub or left to form a broad dome of arching branches to a surprising maximum height and spread of around 3m.
Jasminum nudiflorum is also the most tolerant of Jasmine. Whilst it prefers a fertile, well drained soil it will cope admirably in all but waterlogged conditions and is well suited to a range of aspects although it will flower best in full sun.
Since little else is flowering whilst Jasminum nudiflorum is at its best it is perhaps easiest to combine it with early spring flowering bulbs such as Eranthus hyemalis for a much needed yellow overdose.
Alternatively contrast the small leaves with large foliage plants during the summer months.
