Ginkgo biloba

Ginkgo biloba is considered to be a living fossil and is a truly remarkable survivor. Several specimens even survived Hiroshima.

Suitable for harsh conditions the male tree is used extensively as a street tree where drought and pollution would kill other less tolerant plants.

In the garden Ginkgo biloba range in shape and size but predominenly develop into large attractive column or conical shapes.

In autumn the leaves turn many rich buttery yellows before they eventually fall.

Female trees are to be avoided as the small plum shaped fruit produce an unpleasant odour when crushed.
