Family: Ericaceae
Genus: Gaultheria
Species: mucronata
Syn: Pernettya mucronata
Small shrubs that fill those gaps between their larger brethren and those creeping plants more suited to rock gardens are few and far between. When they do come along they are extremely useful and if they are then loaded with other interesting features you know you have to be onto a winner.
Gaultheria mucronata (formerly known as Pernettya) is one such plant. It is a neat evergreen which rarely reaches more than a 1m high with small spine tipped leaves and attractive flower and berries.
Gaultheria mucronata's heath-like flowers appear in mid summer and are followed by masses of round white, pink or red berries, depending upon the cultivar you choose.
Plant in reliably moist acidic soil in groups with at least one reliably male flowering plant to ensure adequate pollination for the best possible show of berries.
Occasional wayward stems can be easily pruned back with a light attack from a pair of garden shears.
