Draped in 15 to 20cm long catkins during January and February Garrya elliptica makes an interesting structural addition to the winter garden before the real spring activity begins in ernest.
A native of California the plant benefits from a little shelter preferably against a south or west facing wall. Alternatively train over an arch to reap the benefit of those long dangling tassles.
'James Roof' is a cultivar with exceptionally long tassles.
