Family: Amaryllidaceae
Genus: Galanthus
Species: nivalis
Common names: Snowdrop
Galanthus nivalis is one of the very first and very best of spring flowers. It is gregarious, readily hybridising and spreading to form great carpets of flower wherever conditions suit.
The nodding bell shaped flowers may at first glance appear rather uniform but they are far from it.
Numerous cultivars exist and the beauty of these little flowers is in their detail. The inner petals are especially diverse in their green markings. So be prepared to get down on your hands and knees to really appreciate these little winter gems!
Galanthus nivalis love good drainage and a little shade but don't like drying out too much. Their perfect habitat is in cool, broad leaf woodland but are just as happy under deciduous trees and shrubs in suburban gardens.
Provided they have enough moisture Galanthus nivalis will also thrive in gravel gardens and rockeries.
Since Galanthus nivalis is one of the earliest of spring flowers there are few companions to share it's ground. Eranthis hyemalis and the many forms of Iris reticulata will bloom along side snowdrops in the sheltered nooks and crannies of the rock garden.
