Common Name: False castor oil plant

Fatsia japonica

There is no doubt that Fatsia japonica has a tropical look about it, so it comes as a surprise to many non-gardeners to find out that it is remarkably tough.

Don't make the mistake I see many designers make and plant it in a small space or constricted bed. Fatsia japonica is a large plant! Having said this it can be trained to suit more modest locations.

A favourite plant for exotic or jungle planting schemes the huge glossy leaves are of primary interest. Whilst tolerant of most soils and a range of light conditions Fatsia japonica does benefit from a little shelter to prevent damage to the leaves.

Although interesting the flowers are not showy.
