Family: Asteraceae/ Compositaea
Genus: Eupatorium
Species: cannabinum
Common Name: hemp agrimony
Eupatorium cannabinum grows well in Scotland.
It enjoys moist, yet not saturated soil with semi shade, making it perfect for light woodland planting and Scottish summers. Alternatively, provided enough moisture, they will tolerate full sun and work well with grasses mixed through with late summer flowering Helleniums and Echinacea.
Eupatorium cannabinum's strong green flushed purple stems bare aloft large purplish pink heads of small flowers decorated with strong white styles. This gives them a seemingly fluffy texture and adds to their architectural appeal.
The soft greeny purple palmate leaves can seem thuggish but are wonderful if you are after a strong foliage style.
Eupatorium cannabinum do need space, however, as once established they will settle in and spread. If you're working them into a border then place them near the back as they'll happily reach 1.5m in height.
The flowers are deliciously rich in nectar and pollen and will draw in a crowd of hoverflies, bees and butterflies.
