Family: Primulaceae
Genus: Cyclamen
Species: coum
Common name: Hardy Cyclamen
The first signs of spring really fill me with joy and whilst snow drops are traditionally thought of as the first bulbs to emerge from their winter slumber there are others who brave the elements.
Cyclamen coum or Hardy Cyclamens are one such alternative. Cyclamen coum like many winter bulbs is not a big plant reaching only 10cm or so. Small white or pink flowers first appear in late winter and whilst not large or showy the flowers do last well and can carpet the ground given the right conditions. The associated leaves are also attractive, deep green, rounded and sometimes marked with silver.
Cyclamen coum can be a little fickle when it comes to establishing a colony. However this lack of vigour generally comes from a lack of understanding about their needs.
Cyclamen coum likes soil full of organic matter but free draining and never water logged. The plants originate from dry mediterranean woodlands so like the shade of larger plants and the dryness that comes from being under a canopy.
Plant the tubers just below the ground surface or, better still, just below a light organic mulch. If you choose the conditions well then you'll simply love the resulting flowers.
I love to see these purple flowering Cyclamen planted below the yellow flowers of Hamamelis mollis. Its a little gaudy but in January and February I think that's allowed.
