Betula utilis

Betula utilis var. jacquemontii white bark

Family: Betulaceae

Genus: Betula

Species: utilis

Common name: Himalayan Birch

Betula utilis

For us the magnetic pull of this birch is in its peeling bark which unfurls in papery layers.

In the wild the bark colour ranges from white to our favourite, a deep rich chocolate brown spliced with gold. It's impossible to walk by without running your hand over the trunk which is tantalisingly smooth.

The white barked varieties are the easiest to get hold of from garden centres, named var. jacquemontii after the 19th Century French explorer and botanist Victor Jacquemont famous for his explorations in Kashmir and the Himalyas.
