Betula pendula

Betula pendula

Family: Betulaceae

Genus: Betula

Species: pendula

Syn: B.verrucosa

Common name: Silver Birch

Betula pendula

This British native is an absolute favourite of ours from its silvery white bark to its delicate drooping canopy.

Silver birch is quick and easy to grow and whilst it does reach a reasonable size we still think it makes a good tree for a small garden as the canopy is light and airy and creates the most wonderful dappled shade.

If you have more space then nothing lifts the spirits like a woodland of birch underplanted with bluebells in the late spring. In autumn the leaves turn a rich yellow and in spring the branches hang with catkins, how much more can you ask for from one plant.
