Family: Berberidaceae
Genus: Berberis
Species: thunbergii
Common names: Barberry
A small and extremely useful border shrub, Berberis thunbergii comes in a broad range of cultivated forms from plain green foliage to marbled reds and lime yellows.
Sizes range from 30cm to 150cm whilst the standard green form can on occasion make 2m.
Reliably hardy, Berberis thunbergii delights us with fine autumn colours, small and bright late spring flowers and brilliant red berries. Just watch out for those thorns!
Tough is Berberis thunbergii's middle name.
It's suitable for just about anywhere with the exception of waterlogged soils and deep shade. If planting red leaved forms keep them in the sun to prevent them reverting to a dull green.
At around 1 - 2m height and spread the standard green form of Berberis thunbergii is suitable for most shrub borders or as low hedge where the thorns may deter intruders.
