Family: Alstroemeriaceae / Liliaceae
Genus: alstroemeria
Species: aurea
Common Name: Peruvian lily
For an easy mass of happy, vibrant golden flowers Alstroemeria aurea is just the ticket.
Each tuberous rhizome generously sends up multiple flowering stems hosting slender, unusually twisting leaves.
And then each stem boasts several deliciously deep yellow or orange, lily funnelled flowers marked with deeper burnt orange speckles.
Alstroemeria aurea is vigorous and once settled will quickly spread. This may or may not be a problem, depending upon your expectations. If you're looking to colonise an area of open woodland or create a large swathe of colour in a perennial planting then you may welcome this.
On the other hand, if you have limited space you may want to keep a check on its progress.
Although not considered fully hardy in Scotland I have successfully grown Alstroemeria aurea through several cold winters high up in the Scottish Borders, almost certainly a consequence being planted deep in a well drained soil enjoying full sun.
I prefer Alstroemeria aurea to some of the more sickly pink and apricot hybrids now available, although many of them do make excellent, long lasting cut flowers.
