Family: Liliaceae / Alliaceae
Genus: Allium
Species: x hollandicum
Syn: A. aflatuense
Common Name: Persian onion
Allium x hollandicum or Allium aflatuense as it's alternatively known is one of the very best Alliums. Tall and stately Allium x hollandicum produces rich reddy-purple flowerheads forming a neat compact ball of flowers around 10cm in diameter in late May and June. The skeletal flower heads then go on providing architectural forms long after the flower has finished.
Reliably hardy, provided it has good drainage, Allium x hollandicum likes a sunny position in fertile but not overly rich soil. Since it is quite a tall Allium, up to 1m high, avoid sites where it may be battered by winds.
Like many Alliums Allium x hollandicum looses its already scruffy leaves by the time it is in full flower so is best planted through a foil of other low growing vegetation. Combine with Heuchera to play with the red tones or mix among late flowering Tulips in whites or blues for a more sophisticated atmosphere. Alliums make excellent successional plants, appearing from gaps in amongst other plants for a month or so before fading away again.
