Allium cristophii

Allium albopilosum flower head

Family: Alliaceae / Lilliaceae

Genus: Allium

Species: cristophii

Syn: A. christophii, A. albopilosum

Common Name: Star of Persia, Ornamental Onion

Allium cristophii

The huge flower heads of Allium cristophii remind me of fireworks exploding in the night sky. Each individual flower is the spark held out on a long stalk from the centre of the flower to form a perfect globe. The flowers are a light purple, possibly even pink but are not dense enough to be offensive to anyone who as an aversion to these colours. In fact it is this wonderful open structure that is so beguiling. Long after the flower finished the now stiff and woody seed head remains extending the season.

where to plant Allium cristophii

Like almost all bulbs Alliums require a free draining soil. In addition to this a spot in the sun is well received as is a moderate amount of soil fertility. Large stately bulbs like Allium cristophii make fabulous gap fillers. Squeezed in amongst other plants they work just as well spaced out haphazardly through a border as they do all together. Flowering in early summer they can be used to good effect to fill gaps which may appear in between spring flowers fading and later summer flowering plants reaching maturity.
