Family: Asteraceae / Compositaea
Genus: Achillea
Species: millefolium
Cultivar: 'Cerise Queen'
Common Name: Yarrow
Achillea millefolium 'Cerise Queen' is a typical Achillea with characteristic flat, plate-like heads made up of many tiny flowers and feathery, soft green foliage.
This particular variety is a strong, shocking magenta.
Achillea millefolium 'Cerise Queen' is hardy and easy to grow. It is quick to establish and spread enjoying a sunny, dry location. In my experience it has a habit of straying through the border so I advise ring fencing it with robust companions to thwart its advances.
Its tolerance of drought makes it perfect for gravel style gardens and large drifts of perennial planting. It has a tendency to flop as it flowers and tires, although planting amongst sturdier grasses will keep it upright.
Cutting back old flower heads will encourage new as the summer progresses. Achillea millefolium 'Cerise Queen' has attractive, architecturally interesting seedheads which will add interest long after the flowers have faded.
Achillea millefolium 'Cerise Queen' is a magnet for insects and is especially appealing to bees and hoverflies.
