Acer griseum

Acer griseum bark

Family: Aceraceae

Genus: Acer

Species: griseum

Common name: Paper bark maple

Acer griseum

There are a good number of ornamental maples for the average sized garden so why pick Acer griseum?

Whilst other Acers may have slightly more attractive leaves, or larger winged seeds or may even be a bit more architectural in shape, none come close to the bark of Acer griseum. The bark colour is a rich chocolate-orange and flakes away from the stems where it is often seen brilliantly picked out by a low setting sun.

Whilst the bark is undoubtedly the best feature Acer griseum also has all the other attributes which make maples so appealing including spectacular displays of autumn colour.

Acer griseum, the paper bark maple, leaves

Acer griseum reaches up to 10m in height and spread you might want to think carefully about the location of this tree.

Having said this, Acer griseum is a slow grower so provided you don't place it hard against your house you will have years of enjoyment from it before any problems arise.

To keep it happy Acer griseum likes a fertile, moist, well drained soil, sheltered from the wind but not too over shadowed.

As with many deciduous trees, underplanting Acer griseum with spring bulbs is an attractive solution to an area shaded by the broad leafy canopy later in the year. Alternatively try Liriope muscari a useful autumn flowering ground cover whose purple flower spikes compliment the falling red and orange leaves.
