Lysichiton camtschatcensis

Lysichiton camtschatcensis in flower

Family: Araceae
Genus: Lysichiton
Species: camtschatcensis
Common name: White Skunk Cabbage

Why we love Lysichiton camtschatcensis.

Less well known than its American cousin, the impossibly named Lysichiton camtschatcensis is the smaller purer oriental equivalent. The flower consists of a pure white spathe with green central spadix.

Like Lysichiton americanum, the more robust yellow flowering skunk cabbage, Lysichiton camtschatcensis flowers in spring free from foliage which erupts later to form rich mid green 75cm high leaves.

Where to place Lysichiton camtschatcensis

Moist soils are a must for Lysichiton, preferably rich in organic matter and nutrient to help support those large leaves and vigorous growth. Happy in a little shade the plants will also sit out in full sun provided they are kept moist.

Companions for Lysichiton camtschatcensis

The large leaves of Lysichiton camtschatcensis make it difficult to companion plant with anything other than the most robust of bed fellows. None the less companions can be growing amongst the leafless flower such as Caltha palustris and even the more robust Primulas.
