Edinburgh roof garden
a garden of two halves
Our clients had recently moved into their new Edinburgh town house and faced with a garden identical to every neighbour they were keen to stamp their own personality on the space.
The garden was split across the middle by a four foot high wall, leaving one half an empty yet sunny spot on top of the garage roof, and the other half a bare patch of turf falling in the deep shade cast by the building. Our clients had drawn a complete blank as to what to do.
the brief
We were commissioned to bring the two halves together and create one intimate space with a level of privacy from the surrounding houses. As our clients look down onto the space from their third floor balcony the design had also to be appealing from above.

circle path
The path leads from the patio doors to the roof garden and is constructed of interlocking natural stone circles. These create a wide, attractive open path, and add a softness to the sharp angles of the space.
The path has lights sunk into its outer circles and is surrounded by shade loving low level shrubs.
roof deck
To create a flow to the roof garden the dividing wall was lowered and the circular shape was repeated in the deck which is inlayed with small pieces of stone from the path. As an homage to the family passion for sailing we included a compass motif in the deck.
The deck is surrounded with raised rendered planters and built in wooden seating. Colourful herbaceous sun loving planting is complimented with feature trees.

water feature
A simple water feature brings sound and movement to the deck. Water flows from a bespoke metal shoot from one pool into another and water loving plants add colour and texture. It has been carefully positioned so as to be seen from the kitchen window.
utility area
The utility area for the garden is situated at the bottom of the steps. A simple circular path leads directly from the main path allowing for simple discreet access.
