Glasgow family garden
after eight
Our clients realised their garden needed a total revamp when they began work on their striking octagonal kitchen extension. The tired lawn and dark shady paths no longer offered the child friendly social space they desired or lived up to the dynamic new look they were developing for their home.
the brief
We were commissioned to re-design the garden around the new extension and to include areas of seclusion, a space for outdoor dining and a grassy patch big enough for their young son to kick a football, as well as the usual requirements for practical, discreet storage.

patio
We began by designing a sunken octagonal shaped sandstone patio outside the kitchen. Surrounded by complimentary walled planters filled with bright summer herbaceous planting, the space offers shelter and privacy as well as open views from the kitchen.
Our clients had already opened up the patio doors and installed seating before the project was completed so keen were they to be in their new outdoor room!
play
We left a large area of the existing lawn in place as a safe children's play area, visible from the kitchen windows and with easy access to the wendy house.
contemplation seat
A slate path snakes from the lawn to the top of the garden to a small bench nestled beneath three birch trees and amongst a carpet of flowering bulbs.
Our clients were keen on recycling and asked for a memento of their old home. With a nod to the past and a gesture to the future the bench was hand crafted from sandstone blocks from the old outhouse demolished for the kitchen and the trunk from a tree we needed to remove.

path
The path from the back gate was widened and flanked by borders of shade loving plants. The wooden pergola is covered in climbing plants and lit at night to offer illumination and a touch of drama.
The garden gate has a cheeky octagonal peep hole offering a tantalising glimpse of the garden beyond.
storage
We kept the utility area in the same location because of its practical position next to the path and back gate and because it already had established shrubs disguising it.
However, we maximised the existing storage space by repositioning the wendy house and installing a new shed large enough to house the family bicycles and garden tools. An area was left behind the sheds to hide away the wheelie bins.
The garden continues to grow and we are currently discussing ideas with the clients for their front garden.
