large family garden design, Edinburgh
an elegant traditional garden design
Our clients were building a large garage and new driveway and took it as an ideal opportunity to sort out their large back garden.
The space was unstructured with a lot of overgrown mature shrubs, a far call from the open, plant filled garden they wanted.
the new garden design
the brief
Twig was set the challenge of making a beautiful garden that would give their young, sport loving boys enough space to play cricket and football and at the same time provide intimate, elegant space for the family to relax.

the new garden design
- lawn :: we created a large lawn area for the boys, and dog, to let off steam. It's edged with cobbles for easy mowing.
- path and pergola :: a shady path leads from the driveway to the house under a wooden pergola which has been planted with a climbing rose. The path is edged by two herbaceous borders.
herbaceous borders and pergola paths
- planting :: we designed a very loose, open, soft planting scheme for the borders along the pergola path in blues, whites, pinks and purples. The planting by the water feature and patio is much brighter with a robust jungle theme underneath the climbing frame. We crown lifted many of the mature Rhododendrons to give light and space for underplanting.
- water feature :: an elegant, tiled, raised water feature pours water from four steel spouts. It is accompanied by a free draining bed perfect for growing heat loving bearded Iris. It is located on the dining patio and surrounded by colourful planting.
