garden design for a plant lover

transforming a west coast front garden

At twig we attract a broad range of clients. Many wish for a simple garden that will take care of itself so that they can sit back, relax and enjoy.

At other times we find ourselves at the other end of the spectrum, designing a garden for a keen plant lover, someone just itching to get outside and potter about, buy new plants and squeeze them in.

a plant lover's needs

This particular client is just such a plant lover. Having moved into a new house on a new estate she was faced with a bland, uninspiring lawn.

We were invited to develop the structure of the garden with hard landscaping and a backbone planting scheme to which she could add as she pleased.

the new garden design

  • path :: we used a very simple meandering gravel path anchored by three decorative circle motifs. This allows for access to the front door without visitors having to squeeze past the car on the narrow drive. It also creates a delightful sense of a journey through the garden.
  • planting :: a structural planting scheme was put in place to give all year interest and movement. Grasses and perennials give texture and colour whilst clipped evergreens underpin the sense of flow.
  • gravel garden :: at the front edge of the garden is a strip of lawn under which the cables for the house are positioned. Access must be maintained and so we created a gravel garden. Plants were carefully chosen which would self seed through the gravel and if they have to be lifted for access there will be relatively little damage. Such plants will easily repopulate the area once maintenance work is completed.
  • the garden today :: it just keeps on growing! This garden is without doubt a striking alternative to the plain lawns that fringe it and perfectly suits our client who now loves to be involved in her garden even more than before.
  • garden maintenance :: we've already revisited the garden to cast a critical eye over some of the new introductions and to suggest a few more goodies, and we suspect we'll be back again soon!
